FINALLY MPVers can have an auxiliary input on the stock 2003/2004 MPV headunit (shame on Mazda for not providing aux-in to begin with!) . The parts are available from discountcarstereo.com for $100US and they ship to Canada. It will work for any MPV stereo configuration available from the factory and most (if not all) other 03+ Mazdas that have the new modular stereo systems, provided there is a 16-pin J02 port on the back of your headunit.

Mazda's new modular stereos support external CD changers and other devices via the 16pin J02 port on the back of the unit. PIE has developed an interface for this port to connect certain Alpine CD changers. This interface is also capable of providing a simple left/right RCA aux-in port via a PIE convertor.

Simply press the CD source selector on the headunit twice to change to external source. The HU will display "EX 1" while playing external audio. All steering wheel controls will still function normally, except the change track buttons will have no effect on the external source.

Here are links to the required parts:

I've already ordered these parts to allow my 20GB iPod to play through the factory MPV stereo. I am installing all of this in my Titanium Grey 2004 MPV ES (or GT as its called in Canada), which has the premium 9 speaker sound system and 6 disc CD changer. It would've been a shame to have to ditch this headunit for an aftermarket one, simply for an aux-in port.

If you're looking for a clean method to mount an iPod in your MPV, Denison has fabricated a custom MPV mounting bracket and 3G iPod holder that requires no tools to install and does no damage to your vehicle. See here http://densionusa.com/merchant/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=DU&Product_Code=PRC852743&Category_Code=PRC_MAZDA

Belkin makes a good iPod car charger that includes an audio line out http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?&Product_Id=149006. Belkin's iPod audio out will produce CD quality audio, which is far superior to the iPod's headphone port.

I will post back with the results.

Jason.

this is an excellent find! Especially if someone only has the single cd and wants to be able to get an external changer (looks like it's only for Alpine if you want to control it with the OEM head). Or if someone wants a direct connection to the head from an outside source and be able to control volume and switch sources from the head unit as well.

For something like an Ipod, did you choose to go this route for a cleaner signal? I figured you could also just do the cassette adapter thing as well. Cassette cost a bit more but would be universal for most portable devices.

I don't like the audio quality of the casette adapters and FM modulators. I'm after a clean signal and install, which can be easily removed later on. Besides, to use a casette adapter I'd have to spend $300Cdn at the dealer for the casette player.

Actually PIE also develops Mazda interfaces for Pioneer and Audiovox CD changers. See here http://www.pie.net/pcmazda.htm.

Here's how easily the PIE module attaches to the headunit.

Will this work with an 04 MPV with 6 disc in-dash changer?
What about an 03 Mazda 6 with the 6 disc in-dash changer?

i have an 04 mpv w/ 6 disc as well, and i'll let you know if it works as soon as the parts arrive. should be this week.

i've heard that some mazda 6s have issues with this setup. search the forums at www.mazda6club.com for info on this setup with the 6.

The aux-in adapter arrived yesterday. I installed it with cable ties in my empty casette bay as shown in the images above. I was pleasantly surprised with the ease of removing the dash and stock stereo. It only took 10 minutes. The dash trim has only 2 screws and many clips that easily disengage (I gentlly eased the clips off). Make sure however, that you apply the parking brake and move the shift lever all the way down before lifting the dash trim out. The stereo has only 4 screws on the front holding it in place (the RX8 stereo unit has hidden screws and anti-theft security).

I drilled a small hole next to the cigarette lighter to expose the mini-rca cable from the dash. I actually drilled through the plastic cigarette lighter mounting plate assembly. This way I could easily and cheaply replace this piece of plastic should I decide to remove the aux-in adapter. All I need to do is find a black rubber grommet to slip over the mini-rca cable and conceal the hole better. Does anyone know where I can find these?

I have the Belkin iPod charger plugged into the cigarette lighter which not only charges the iPod, but also provides a line out from the iPod where the mini-rca cable plugs in. The sound quality through the line out is as good as the iPod delivers, although I'm using an expensive Monster dual rca to mini-rca cable. A nice feature that other iPod chargers don't have, is it automatically pauses the iPod when the vehicle is shut off.

I spent only an hour for the entire install, which overall I consider very simple to do. Installing and updating the iPod software on my computer I found was more difficult.

I'm still waiting on the iPod mouting bracket and holder to mount the iPod on the dash. I will be installing it on the dash right below the cigarette lighter.

The only beef I have is the iPod only comes in white, which stands out on the MPV's grey interior. I wish apple offered black or grey.

Jason.

Anybody wanna be a guinea pig?

http://www.sylfex.com/products/auxmod/

Looks promising for $50 , question of course is, if it shall work with the PeeVee.

BTW, Stephen Foskett's Miata Page mentions, that the PIE should work on 01-03 double DIN models as well.
