Thanks - I should have added that the US$100 p.a cost is for full (no worries) coverage - different insurance terminology makes it difficult to readily compare but yes, this includes what we call "Third Party" in that damage caused to anyone elses property is included. Damage by anyone else, insured or not, to my vehicle is included. Medical costs are separate - they are covered in the annual Registration (license) fee - a Government tax of about US$130 that pays for roads, safety and medical costs of road users accidents.

OK, here is an update on my try to get online quote. I got the letter from the Amex car insurance (COSTCO one). It was that denial in writing, but it had one interesting detail the online denial didn't have. They said that not enough experience meaning less than three years. So I can stretch the dates or just wait few months if they check it against DMV records and I'll be fine. goggles

Do you have any official records from the Czech Republic (that's where you are from, right?) that you could offer them? That might be helpful and make this work. I would not stretch the dates. If they decide you are lying about that one item, they may decide they don't believe you about anything you say and never want to deal with you.

Yes, I have my CZ license, but I'm not in a hury to get new insurance, at least not right now, thought it looks like they might be offering better coverage for the same bucks. But than again there is the other issue how credible is the insurance company and how nicely they deal with claims and such.

I'm hoping that they (American Express) is going to treat their customers right. Plus, when it comes to insurance, I try not to count on making a claim. But you're right, there's always a risk. I figure Costco doesn't want to deal with a company that would tarnish their image and make them lose customers who pay for memberships (the real profit maker).

I'll let you know though if the insurance company treat us badly (but I hope I never need to file a claim).

Remember that the insurance company is regulated by each state in which it does business, and if it treats you unfairly you do have leverage by contacting the state Department of Insurance and filing a formal complaint. I believe you can also check (in most states) the DOIs website for complaints brought against an insurer you are considering. Also may not hurt to do a google search and see if people are "talking" about a particular insurer anywhere.

NY insurance is high if you have children with driver licenses. Wife's 2003ES is 1100 US for one year. 1992 MPV is 900 for one year. Her 1999 Grand Prix is $2100 US for one year and thats with 500 deductible. My son is listed on that car and he is away at college. My 1994 Formula is $2200 US for 1 year with 1,000 deductible. My son is not allowed to drive that car or my insurance is null and void. Jack.
