Hello,
This small EVAP leak is driving me crazy!
I hit the wall every 10K. It was P0456 and now P0442. What is the difference?
TIA

Both codes are evap leak codes that am sure you are very aware of abalaev as I peeked into you prior posts and you have been having this evap issue quite regularly it looks like.
P0456 is code that would set for what is called a 'very small leak' in the evap system. Leak that would be the equal in size to a hole .020" or a little larger than 1/64" in diameter somewhere in the system would set this code.
A P0442 is just a larger leak detected that would be in the area of a .040" hole or twice the size of the 'very small leak'.
Leakage that is very much greater than would be reported with a P0442 code is glomped into the P0455 or 'evap system gross leak detected'. P0455 usually covers loos fuel caps and even up to completely destroyed charcoal canisters. Anything big. Odd that you would only be getting this code set every 10k miles or so. There is a reprogramming of the engine computer that would address this problem if you actually do not have any leak but is instead just a computer glitch. The TSB is old so would hope that the dealer has already done this BEFORE you ran out of warranty. Here is link to the TSB.

If this has already been done then basically you are looking at a random, small leak in the evap system when self test is being performed.
There is also another TSB that does not list the code you are getting but can still be the source of the problem. It basically is dealing with overfilling of the fuel tank although that is not specifically stated in the TSB. When tank is full, pump shuts off, and gas jocky decides to round up to the next dollar is when this condition occurs. Fuel overflows the tank and is drained directly into the evap port near filler opening and saturates the charcoal canister with lots of raw fuel. Since canister is not designed to be a spare fuel tank with liquid fuel in it there are problems that can then develop when the evap self test is run. Have seen both of those codes as well as leak codes as system just can not operate correctly with liquid fuel filling the canister. Before this TSB came out we were actually pulling the canisters to see how they tipped the scales. Too heavy meant liquid fuel and service kit install which eventually led to this TSB.
Hope this has been of some help but is a tricky one as it is quite difficult to determine if system is actually leaking without a pressure test.

Hello,
Just a quick update. I bought new gas tank cup and cleared the code. So fas so good.
Don't forget to clean up the gas tank *outlet* with rubbing alcohol periodically Smile
