Anyone know if there is a way to read the model number from the vin? Or is there another easier way to tell the difference between models?

There is a VIN decoder on our site, fwiw. Scroll to the bottom of the page.

You'll notice it breaks apart the VIN for you showing a little of how it's deciphered.

Yeah my vin has a LV522 so I guess it could be a DX, ES or a LX still eh? Allthough I'm pretty sure it's a DX.

Here's my vin decoded from the tool page...
http://www.mpvclub.com/tools.php

Assembled in: Japan
Manufacturer: Mazda Japan
Vehicle Type: Minivan
Model: MPV (Generation I)
Body Style: Unknown
Engine Type: Unknown
Model Year: 1996
Vehicle Serial Number: 706707

Now if we can just get it to decode the body style and the engine type! Nice work whoever did the work on the vin tool it's cool. If someone can find me the pattern for decoding the vin I'd be happy to write another version of this php script...

Cheers,

Lemme break it down like this:

A DX (2WD only) has standard 5-passenger seating (2nd row bench only; no 3rd row seating) and cloth seats.

An LX (available in either 2 or 4WD) has standard 8 passenger seating (2nd and 3rd row benches) and cloth seats; 7-passenger is optional (2nd row captain chairs and 3rd row bench).

An ES (available in either 2 or 4WD) has standard 7-passenger seating (2nd row captain seats and 3rd row bench) and leather seats. Though, there has been a couple rare instances where I actually saw 2nd and 3rd row leather bench seats. A power moonroof is available as an option.

*The preceeding applies specifically to 1996 MP's. DX models were discontinued after '96 so LX and ES trim levels also apply to 1997-98's.
