Well, our third's due any day now so I fit 3 car seats in the van. I have a Britax Roundabout forward-facing behind the driver, a Century Smartfit rear-facing in the center, and a Cosco high-back booster in 3rd-row center.

I bought the retrofit LATCH belts from Century to use on the seats in the 2nd row. I found it much better than the seatbelts to get the car seats seats in tight. Too bad it's not available in the third row.

Also, I'm slightly annoyed that there aren't additional anchor points in the 3rd row (since all forward facing child seats in Canada require a tether). I tried positioning the seat on the outboard seat (while still using the tether) but I'm not sure if it's because of the car seat (which isn't that great) or what, but it wasn't that stable. (I know that if I put the Britax back there, it would have been fine in the outboard position.)

Anyone else with 3 car seats? Or more? (my wife says she's considering having a fourth Surprised .)

heh! Looks like we have a few posts to go, huh Stargazer?
Early congrats on you're soon-to-be!

Is it possible that either of the clips on the outboard sides of the seat well could serve as a tether anchor? I'm not quite sure what they're real purpose is, I think maybe for the tailgate seat feature, I'll have to get out that durned manual Grin.

I haven't looked at the regs in a while, but I thought that LATCH/ISOFIT/ISOFIX was going to be required in 4 places in MV and any other vehicle w/a third row by model year 2005. I'm going by memory, which is bad these days. I would think that the MPV will get them soon enough (2003my?) just to keep up with the Jones (Ody).

Man, 500 posts to God status? Hmmmmm, time to go hang out in 'testing' for about 488 posts, lol. j/k Do you get to be called a "Posting hog" at 1000 posts?

I'm not sure about this on the MPV, but I know that with Saturns, the dealership can install a tether for you. Saturn does not come with one standard, or at least didn't when I had mine. May want to check....this is different than the latch system, but it works.

Hmmm...498 to go to highest setting!

I'm pretty sure the clips for the cargo net are not attached to the frame so it wouldn't be strong enough. I suppose if I could a suitable point on the frame I could drill a hole (or not Rolling Eyes).

My pet peeve is that Mazda has made no provisions for installing additional anchor points. Other manufacturers usually state in the owner's manuals to contact the dealer to add more. Mazda just says don't use the outboard positions Rolling Eyes.

Will that change in Sep 2002 since the new LATCH legislation comes into effect?

stargazer,

Congrats on the new baby. I'm in the same boat. I've got three small children, as well.

I haven't noticed these latches in the baby stores. Where did you get them. Can they be found at places like "Babies R Us", or did you get them off of the internet?

TIA

FWIW, our '97 Saturn SL has the hole for 3 tether anchors on the rear deck. You just pop a plastic plug and fasten the anchor.

Hi--We use a Fisher-Price Futura 20/60 Car Seat. It doesn't use LATCH or need a tether. The seatbelt path for installing the seat in the car (we typically put it in the second row right seat) is such that when properly installed, the car seat feels like it is nailed down. It is really in there securely, and barely moves even when yanked vigorously. This might be an option for those who need to use a carseat in a spot with no tether anchor. Note that this car seat is marketed as not needing a tether, but I don't know how any legal jurisdictions that require a tether would view it.

The 20/60 is a front facing car seat for kids who weigh more than 20 and less than 60 pounds and are between 28 and 48 inches tall. IIRC, the four point restraint with shield (model 79014) had some safety issue, but the five point harness (model 79015) was considered just fine. We have had ours (five point) for about a year and we love it. Our five year old finds it very comfortable, even on long trips. The model 79015 is no longer available new, but I think is available on eBay at times. There are a number of reviews on epinions as well. We paid about $100(US) when we bought ours new from online retailer dmart about a year ago.

Anyhow, this might be an option for folks who need to use multiple car seats. Dan

I got the LATCH retro fit from Toys R Us. It's made by Century and is basically just a belt with hooks on each end so that you attach to the lower anchors. It's great, especially in the middle sliding seat because then the shoulder belt doesn't get in the way.

Oh, and yes, she's here Grin. Baby Kendra was born on Jun 26 Smile Smile Smile (one reason why I haven't been around Wink).

Congrats on your new baby Stargazer. Our second will be born around end of August or early September. When she comes (we were told it is a she) we will be using the MPV quite a lot more. With a two year old and a newborn and two car seats, it will be pretty tight in the Escort wagon. Talk about under power! Grin

Thanks for the heads up on the Latch retrofit. I think I'll be heading to babies r us soon (and to Mazda to get the floor anchors installed!).

We were at Toys 'R Us today and saw the LATCH retrofit kits. 3 different brands (EvenFlo, Century, and ??). All appeared to be just a LATCH belt and nothing else. And each box said to only use specifically with that brand of seat.

We'll probably pick up a EvenFlo one since our rear-facing infant carrier with base thing is an On My Way II. Not that we're using it now, but we don't want Brooke to be an only child. Wink

I bet that same belt could work on our Fisher Price SE-II. When we get our ES (woohoo Grin) this week, I'll probably try our different seats in it and see how they fit just using the seat belts (and belt clip if needed).
