I'm assuming that stabilizer links and sway-bar links are the same thing. If so, I've changed them myself recently, and it took about 20 minutes on the side that came loose without problems. One variable that can easily make this job more work, though, is if the nuts holding the links on are frozen. One of mine was frozen, and that alone took me 20-30 minutes to get loose. Without a problem like that, I think an average DIYer could do the project - both sides - start to finish in an hour. A shop a lot less than that! There are some helpful tips on this forum that I used. 2003 MPV LX

I just solved (X-fingers-crossed!!) my code P0306 by spending $2.99 @ autozone!!
I started with the basics i.e. bought 1 spark-plugs to troubleshoot. I removed the culprit (Cyl # 6) connections, and installed the new sparkplug. While there, I cleaned the gunk around the hole and re-inserted the old coil back.
I then drove 10 miles and the CEL came back on. went to autozone, had the read it again, and yes, another P0306....Hmmmmm
Decided to swap coil # 6 with coil # 2 (front far left while facing motor)..just to see if the misfire jumps from P0306 to P0302...I have driven all weekend over 250 miles and there's ZERO misfire, hesitation, funky smell or codes thrown.
I have my fingers crossed, but I am still hoping that a little brain muscle just saved me $600+ job...for now... 2004 MPV LX |

Anybody ever use these coils from Ebay (item-350179250711)? How did they work? I did not find anything in the service records on the van I just bought about the spark plugs getting changed. With 76k all in the city it is time to change them.
I figure while I have the intake manifold off I should just replace them all at that time. These seem like a great price. |

I want to say I have had hesitation problems at low throttle without a CEL and finally today after months got a misfire in cylinder 5. About to change that coil out. I think that was the problem, so if so a bad ignition coil will NOT always throw an engine light.
EDIT: I just replaced coil 5 and this problem is no better. What else can be causing a cylinder misfire? OEM plugs are quite new (half year). |

I have an '00 MPV that is exhibiting this very same problem. #3 Cylinder misfire to be exact. The van has 158k miles on it and I've never touched the plugs, coilpack or pcv. So I've got a half-mind to replace all plugs, the coilpack and wires.
The big question is does Bubba's write-up even remotely apply to the 2000 MPV (and if not, is there a decent write up somewhere)? Got Christ?

I bought the van at 77k, so I am assuming plugs were replaced at some point. I've never had it done because the stealership wanted way too much for it.
I guess if I pull the plugs and find them now gapped at .95 and the electrodes eroded to mere nubs they would be OE. Got Christ?

Great post. Here's my deal. Own a MPV 02 with 115K miles, owned it since 20K miles. Never replaced plugs or coils. Two years ago replace transmission (ouch). Recently been having some hesitation when driving (CEL not on), so immediately though it was transmission. Dealer has diagnosed it as bad coil "on back side". Wants $950 to replace all 6 coils.
Q1) I want to replace the coil, but don't know which one. How can I be sure which cylinder is misfiring? (CEL not on, so no code available)
Q2) dealer says that I have many oil leaks and he would replace the intake manifold gasket. I don't understand why there would be oil there. When removing the manifold, does the gasket need replacement?
Thanks! |

redmad, last time I had hesitation the cel didn't come on. But, it showed a misfire code when I took it to Autozone for a free scanning. I'd ask your deslerhship hopw they determined it was a bad coil. It may be a few other things as well...i.e PCV hose. Not sure, but doesn't a leaky intake manifold gasket cause hesitation problems? Dealer may be trying to double dip. 2004 MPV LX (Plus Pkg, Traction and Airbag Pkg, All Sport Pkg, Roof Rack, 75k miles) Cosmic Sand

My wife doesnt even drive much and this thing has been in the shop for the stuipest problems. Well i better read up on the replacement coils as i can see this is only the first of many i see LOL. |

Thanks Bubba,
Your tutorial gave me the confidence to try this myself.
Replaced the rear coils and plugs tonight. Easy job. Didn't remove everything, but was able to scoot the intake manifold forward to gain access to everything in the back..
I took off the bracket for the cruise control that's attached to the top of the passenger side strut tower (3) 10mm nuts. That made room to get in the back easily. |

Woot, just replaced 6 plugs and #3 coil. I didn't bother replacing 1 and 2, hopefully that won't come back to bite me.
Entire job on a 2004 took me four hours. I didn't run into any particular problems, but these things take a while first shot. I'm sure I could do it in two next time, maybe less.
Per the fourth or so post on page 3 I did not remove the lower PCV hose. I also did not touch my coolant system at all or detach those connections to the bottom of the throttle body (TB). I was able to move the manifold out of the way enough to get to the coils.
Write up with pics was superb, thanks!
The job is not particularly difficult but it is a PITA, especially with the quick approach I used, because with the manifold not fully out of the way I did scrape up my forearms a lot |
Haha! Yeah, it did. I recommend people change ALL rear coils if changing one. I just did this again, replaced the other two rear, entire job took 1:40 including the three rear plugs again.
History and lessons learned:
- replaced coil 3 and 6 spark plugs at around 70k because of rough engine and check engline light
- car was fine for a bit
- earlier this year it started "missing" when under low/gentle acceleration only. Moderate or high it was fine, symptoms worse when going gently up hills
- no CEL
- FINALLY I got a CEL on cylinder 5. I knew it was the coil. However, the problem was not fixed at all. I replaced spark plug 5 again (realize it had less than 10k but I wondered if the bad coil had messed it up) and was ok, but then the van got worse again
- I replaced coils 4 and 6 (hoping to get lucky and not have to do 1 and 2) and no benefit
- recently things have gotten worse quickly. Car misses when idling and horrible at low throttle, so tonight finally did the last two coils and replaced all three spark plugs again. I get them for cheap at my local shop (OEM) and the plugs for $52 from some link further up this thread (onlinemazdaparts I think).
NOW the car finally seems fine. I should note that my stealership had no idea what this was and thought it was transmission related, but after changing the fluid (I did it) no benefit.
I will update this if the problem returns and was not coils, but finally this time I'm really confident I've fixed it.
Again. IF CHANGING A REAR COIL, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD CHANGE ALL THREE. IT'S NOT A JOB WORTH REPEATING IF YOU CAN AVOID IT! |

Wow, that is really bad luck. Keep an eye on that warranty, if this vehicle doesn't get better I'd bail before it's done.
redmadcap intake manifold gasket does not need to be replaced when the manifold is taken off, although it certainly can leak and MAY be part o your problem.
They want $950 JUST for the coils? That is quite simply INSANE. You can buy the coils for $300 and do it in an afternoon. I bet a local mechanic could do it better, too. I think the problem with going by the book as your stealership is doing is that they are taking the labor for one coil and multiplying, which isn't fair; to do one rear coil, for example, it would comfortably take a mazda mechanic say 60-90 minutes and if you're doing three of them it's only a few minutes extra per coil, since most of the labor is preparing access. |

Exactly. That's what I did when I changed mine out a couple of years ago. If you are curious and want to see if one of the rear coils were bad, you can easily swap them out with the front 3 coils and then see what error codes pop up. RBB
