Hi help please
I am working a 91 mpv 4 cyl. it stalls-- sometimes runs for 10 secs other times 20 minutes before stalling , it seems to quit abruptly.
I have changed the fuel filter, air fil.. and plugs.
I have also swaped the distributor with another used one, still no go.
I ave also tried swaping the ignition switch itself, still stalls.
Any suggestions please
Thanks Mitch

I think this will be the age old problem with all the first Gen MPV's - the Pickup/ignitor module in the distributor under the steel cover plate. I think on your car they come as separate components, the pickup unit does not usually fail (It is the squarish black part that is centred on the distributor shaft but may be attached to the ignitor bridge shaped piece bit on top). But the ignitor does die and then comes back to life again a few seconds or minutes later.

Ours failed several times over a month and when most times it would restart while still moving forward, the last time it didn't so I recognised the problem and towed it to the auto-electician - he confirmed the problem and fixed it quickly - i was at work 5 miles away so it was easier to let them replace it but it is easy to do - helped my son do the same on his Ford Laser AKA Mazda 323.

Thanks for the info

I did bring it to an Auto Electric shop and they did basic analizing and could not find anything first try.
They said it would require many hours possibly to find problem so i stopped them because cant afford that right now.
I guess i will ask them if they checked the igniter for sure or not.
Thanx Mitch

I did swap the distributor but i guess the old one could have been bad too

Laughing Well after more swaps i finally got it working!!!!

The last thing i tried was swaping the ECU and coil with used ones from the scrap yard 60.00 for both , ya good deal.

It has been running for a while now and no stalling so it looks good.
Thanks for the help from these forums

That was the other thing I was going to suggest as it is very hard to fault find an ECU with brains problems or even waterlogged - visible but only if you look... Smile

I hope she stays going now... good call!

Let us know how you get on...
