Gah! The dreaded double post ... my apologies!

Here's a drawing of the mileage sensor circuit:

It appears to work as follows:

1. The ECU is always presenting 12 VDC on the terminal attached to this circuit.

2. This circuit is normally ungrounded (except when the ignition switch is in the RUN position but the engine is not running).

3. The MIL set screw, as shown, connects the circuit to the NO (normally open) terminal of the mileage sensor assembly.

4. At the appropriate interval (80,000 miles/130,000 km), a cam driven off the odometer will have tuned 180 degrees and will push up the traveller arm in the mileage sensor, grounding the circuit. This gives the energised CHECK ENGINE light a path to ground, and it illuminates.

5. If the reset screw is moved from the NO position to the NC position, the circcuit will now be connected to the ungrounded side mileage sensor.

6. Note that if the light is not reset, in another 80,000 miles/130,000 km the cam will have rotated 180 degrees, the circuit will be broken, and the light will go off on its own.

Hope this helps!

Nothing like some mechanicals mixed with electronics! Thanks Manitoba - explains everything.

Good picture copy too.

Manitoba, Thanks for the excellent reply. Where did you get the drawing and info? It seems that if one performs regular maintenance, removal of that screw is a good option.
