I have the 15" 'alloy' rims that came with the tow package. I was adding air to the tires not paying much attention to the rims when something caught my eye. A section of the rim about 1" long and 1/2" wide looked like bubbled paint. No major cracks, yet, but some rust color was coming through it was very surprising. I checked the other 3 rims and its the same thing, smaller versions though.

Quote from Mazda Canada website;
Alloy Wheels and Towing Package (alloy wheels, A/T oil cooler heavy duty radiator) (requires Convenience Package on DX model)

Alloy plated steel rims sounds more like it...hmm Sad

Looks like Mazda is getting a visit on Monday.

To add, before the MPV we bought some Motegi MR7 rims (see below) for our 2002 Corolla, if Mazda can't do anything they will be my choice again Smile

Perhaps the dealership will help if Mazda won't. You certainly have the right to be unhappy. How many miles on your MPV?

Good Luck......Mikem

Just over 46,000KM...we have the 7 year warranty, I'll find out when I go tomorrow if its covered or not. Bare aluminum rims would be nice if they could supply them. Wink

I called Mazda about this today, the Service Manager is not there until next Monday. So I guess I'll find out what happens then.

Metalfab,

I'm from same area as you, with trips to the interior in winters, 57k km and no sign of any corrosion on the same 15" wheels (touch wood). I'd go after the dealer/warranty for that. I can recommend Freeway Mazda in Surrey - I've had more than good luck with the Service Manager there (his name is Dave Frank - I always ask for him specifically). They're not super busy, so service is pretty good.

btw, is your van garaged, or outside stored? Is it a "native" BC van?

Good luck.

I bought mine at Metrotown Mazda, very good people there, the service manager just happens to be away for a week.

The van is always outside, the garge is full of tools Wink

I'm on my way to Mazda in about 1 hour. They are going to inspect the rims and let me know whether they need repairing or replacing. Wish me luck on the latter as if one section is doing it now another area could start at any time.

Just got back. After they looked at the rims the service manager said he has only seen this on Mazda3 rims before. However, he is going to call the head office in Toronto and will let me know whats going to happen.

all 4 of my 17" rims were like that when less than 2 1/2 years old, my service rep says it's non warranty related, normal wear and rear. I email mazdausa, never heard back.

Two of my wheels have heavy oxidation to the clearcoat. I haven't been to the dealer yet, but I'm not encouraged to hear they think it's "normal" wear and tear! Sad
