My 2001 MPV has just hit 60K miles and I was wanting to know if it requires a timing belt replacement. I can find not mention of it in the maintenance section of the owners manual. Does anyone know if it is required or recommended?

Thanks

Hello JShanklin, Redline1 is right. They don't mention it in the manual because all 00-06 MPVs use timing chains. No replacement is needed. Cool

Yep, 2000+ MPV's use a chain. Regular oil changes should be all that's needed.

And keep your fingers crossed that the tensioners don't fail on you! But maybe that was only on some 2000's, one of which I got lucky to own!

Thanks for the timely responses on this.! What a relief! I thought it might have a chain since it was not in the manual but, dr. GoodScrew (Dealer) informed me that it needed to be changed during my last oil change which caught me by suprise. I informed him I would do it myself if needed.

I believe the dealer wanted 325.00 to replace the timing belt/chain.

It is more than $1000 just in labor costs to take things apart and put them together again for any timing chain related issue on the MPV, so it would have been interesting to see what the dealer would have done had you agreed to the "timing belt" replacement.

Such things should probably be reported to Mazda so that they get an idea of how knowledgeable their "factory trained" technicians are. Perhaps it was just a clueless service advisor, but I would think that even they would get some basic training.

Sounds like standard dealer rate to change the timing belt on the pre-2000 MPV, which uses a Mazda V-6 with a timing belt.
