I have a 2001 MPV with 60,000 miles. I was planning to get the timing belt replaced with the next tune up but some people said I can wait until 90k because the engine is bigger (V6). Any thoughts? What does Mazda recommend?

Both the 2000-01 2.5 liter V6 and the 2002-2005 3.0 V6 Duratec engines have the steel timing chain and steel gear. You should see the chain when you open your oil cap and look inside. No need to change the steel gear and steel chain unless you are drag racing the van and reving the engine to 8,000 rpms while doing your burnouts. Jack.

Dear Hangman, What will happen after a while, the chain will stretch out a little and your timing can go off plus the gear teeth can wear down. Then after a few years of hard driving and high RPM abuse the steel chain and gears will need to be replaced. But Duratec is more durable than some of the early 60's GTO's and other GM cars with timing chains that used to shear off the aluminum covered nylon gears. Jack.
