Last night my a/t temp light goes on driving on the highway. I pull over, check fluids, and it's HOT. Still red, but smells a tad sweet. Coming home today, I lose 5th gear, then 4th,.... Pull off and check fluids. The temp gauge showed no warning. I try to crawl home (5 miles) Can't get it to grab 1st. No reverse. AAA is called. You guys think My 120,000 trans is dead, or torque converter failed. If it needs a new trans, any upgrades available from stock?

Sure sounds like that trans is gone, sounds pretty bad
I'm fairly sure you can find a transmission on ebay fairly cheap today though, so at least you're fortunate there.

I'd still say change the fluid and see what happens from here before you jump onto a transmission because you never know what might happen

coolant has a sweet smell when it burns, if your radiator has the trans cooler built in as most cars do check that it hasn't leaked, fluid will get a milky look if it has

Good thinking from jokiin^
The radiator could've cracked internally and mixed coolant with trans fluid.
If that is the case, I would still go for a few fluid changes and go from there.
ATF is really cheap at Walmart, I've been using it in my MPV for a long as I remember

5th gear (and automatic)? This will be a 2002 or newer MPV, correct?
Many Mazdas over the years, including two 1st-gen MPVs

Thanks guys! It has a trans cooler in it w/ tow package. Got a couple shops looking into it. Having trouble finding a new or good used trans at the moment. I say 5th gear, but it might only have 4. It is a 91 4wd auto with the 3.0. This MPV has only 110,000 miles on car with only 50,000 on motor. I would hate to scrap it!

4 Gears w/ OD
A Trans swap would be in the call at this point, looks so be easier than an engine though if you ask me.
Goodluck!
