Guys,
Is there a DIY for the front struts of an MPV 1996.
I am buying KYB front struts, new Strut boots, and new struts mount and bearing.
My van is old and paint is in bad shape, but the engines and transmission is relatively new, so after much debating, I decided that I will install new struts in it. I have experience of installing struts in other cars but I want to leverage other members experience to avoid silly mistakes. Confused Exclamation wave

The struts are very simple to change on this car, just make sure to remove the brackets holding any wires or brake lines if there are any attached (can't remember them specifically) and them unbolt the mount from the top and the 2 bolts attached to the spindle itself.

Make sure to also check that the new strut mounts actually have an angle to them, I ordered Mevotech strut mounts and both were perfectly flat (meaning no caster) while the OEM ones are slanted for an adjustable caster by turning the actual mount if needed, thus I kept my original mounts by popping off the cover plate and repacking them with grease or oil.

As always, Goodluck!

I have ordered the KYB struts and bellows as well as the strut mounts. These are supposed to be OEM, but I will not have them for a week or so, I hope they are the right ones.

I thought about buying used ones but most of them seemed to have cracked rubber parts.
The breaker yards around here do not seem to have any MPVs anymore

The spring and strut assembly come out as a unit.
I clamped the assembly to my bench to work on it. Use 2 spring compressors to compress the spring. You'll have to separate the strut from the spring by removing the rod nut from the strut shaft. The rod nut presses down against the upper spring seat which settles into a flat part of the strut shaft locking the two from rotating. Here are some pics to give you an idea how I locked the spring seat in place to remove the rod nut from the strut shaft. Also, there's a piece of rubber that sits between the spring seat and the spring. Mine was pretty much rotted away so I used a piece of hose to cover the end of the spring as a substitute. Here are some pics.

Thanks Ed.
I appreciate the hints about the rotted rubber -- I am sure mine is in the same state.I will let you know how I got on when I finish the job.
Luckily, the MPV is a spare vehicle for moving large things around.

You can order that rubber insulator from ebay or the dealership for 25$ each, I actually have two in my garage right now getting ready to do the same job for my 4wd though
