Hello! Alright so here's the situation. New head gaskets, new timing belt kit all Mazda products. Everything put back together to specification. Full tuneup, rebuilt distributor, new fuel pump and filter. plenty of spark and gas. Takes a long time to start up, you have to actually hit the pedal to get it to catch, and then you must keep holding the gas pedal to keep it running. Let the gas pedal go and it shuts off immediately. Tested the TPS and it is well within specs. Going to go over all vacuum lines again, but TOTALLY open to any and all suggestions!!!

Of course the first question will be have you double checked the timing belt cam and crank positions. I had a similar issue, not with the hard to start, but with the engine not idling. My problem was solved because the MAF connector on top of the air filter box was not fully seated. Mine was the 1990 thru 1995 model. Also check the connectors, one for the Intake Air temp,( located between the cylinder 4-6 Intake piping), and the other for the coolant temp sensor located under the front of the Intake Plenum. All these sensors are used by the ECM to control fuel flow.

When the crank and cams are in their starting positions, is the distributor pointing to spark plug 1 (left of the post)?

^x2
Sure sounds like a timing issue with the crank, cams, or distributor

Wow I know you checked the TPS but DID YOU CALIBRATE IT?Huh?

you will notice that the holes are elongated. The ECM MUST KNOW when the throddle (spelling) is fully closed. Im sure another member has posted this before, and the adjustment is very fine, just the slightest touch of the gas peddle sets it off otherwise, the computer is constantly looking for the fully closed signal and nothing works right.

best of luck
Joe
