During the winter- to summer-tire changeover last weekend I noticed the front brake pads on the 5 were getting a bit thin. They were likely the original set, and had about 85000 km on them.
Picked up a replacement set at the dealer Monday - I thought $50 including 5% GST & 8% PST was pretty good. The rotors looked good so I didn't replace them or remove them for machining.
The replacement went well this afternoon. The caliper is held in place by two unusual indented-hex bolts, the heads of which are hidden under/protected by rubber caps. I removed the caps and used a 7 mm Allen key to remove the bolts. (I'm sure that design will be frustrating for someone in the rust belt. No way to get in there with vice grips.) The caliper is wider than I'm used to - I had to work to be able to push the piston back into its cylinder with my 3" C-clamp. Will pick up a 4" clamp for future use.
Anyway, it's all back together and feels about the same as before - that is, pretty good.
This being Winnipeg, I took the opportunity to spray all of the steel underneath with Rust Check oil. The 5 still looks good underneath. It looks like Mazda really has improved its rust protection.

Nice work, even though I’m a welder/fitter I'm not mechanically inclined.

I wish I could weld! I'm jealous.
Replacing pads on disk brakes is not one of the harder mechanical tasks. Sounds scary because they're so critical, but they're not hard at all.
