Thanks VKC, I didn't know they pulled it from the U.S. market. Man, that guy sure didn't like it. It sounds like it's worth the extra bucks to stay away from the bottom model. |

I'm sensing the reviewer was ok with the 4-banger on their dime. Yes, they'd be settling and giving up some of the cushiness of the 6. I was perfectly happy with the power of the 2.6 litre 4-banger in our 1st MPV. IIRC, it was rated at 149 HP and 169 ft-lbs torque.
From the same era, Toyota's Previa offered (only) a 2.4 litre engine (although in later years it was turbocharged). I never heard anyone complain about the power, even in the normally-aspirated version.
Until fairly recently, Chrysler offered a 2.4 litre four in its minivans, although I understand the take-rate was very low.
I think a lot of it is perception. For most of us most of the time, a four-banger is perfectly adequate. Manitoba MPV

Hit 'Submit' too soon ...
Should have added - we're also fine with the 2.3 litre 4-cylinder in our Mazda 5.
As well, with the modern engines being DOHC, the intake manifold of a transverse V6 covers the rear bank, and typically needs to be removed to allow access to the spark plugs in the rear bank. That's a lot of labour for the DIYer, and a lot of money for everyone else.
The 5's plugs are easily accessed. Manitoba MPV

Forgot to mention my other 4-cylinder van of the past. We lived in New Zealand in 2003/04 and owned a 1995 Mazda Bawngo (spelt phonetically to get past the censor). It was a 9-passenger van (3-3-3) with a carbureted 1998 cc SOHC engine (petrol, not diesel) w/ manual choke & 5-speed manual tranny. It was a fine city vehicle, but positively scary on NZ's twisty rural highways. With its large flat side area and high centre-of-gravity, it was scary in crosswinds. Acceleration was leisurely, and moderate grades on State Hwy #1 were taken in 2nd gear @ 40 kph. That's one where a V6 might have been preferable. Manitoba MPV

I had a supercharged previa.
The power was outstanding. Much more powerful than a v6.
I hear them on the road with a supercharger whine.
More importantly though that engine is extremely reliable.
I also did airport delivery with the Chrysler 4 banger grand caravans. Also extremely reliable and the gas mileage was excellent.
In the Toyota it was actually terrible.
Yes v6 Fwd are the hardest vehicles to work on.
I would describe the Ford mazda v6 as one of the easiest. Although I take that back the v6 caravan is often the easiest.
Almost anything else is even harder especially the Nissan v6. 2000 white mazda mpv lx |

And the 2021 Sienna will be 4 cyl. hybrid - what a come for a 4 cyl. engine!
My sienna had timing leak chain cover leak though I wasn't sure if the dealership just wanted to rip off Toyota since it was still under warranty. But, I am not a big van of V6 engine unless it's from the MPV, yes I am biased * 2016 Kia Soul EV
