Hi
I have a 2000 MPV. The "engine check" light came on. I took the van to my honest and trusted mechanic. He diagnosed the problem as something wrong with the Bank 1 Sensor 1 oxygen sensor. But he does not know where it is located. Can someone help us? I dont like to go to the dealers.

Thanks
Sam

This post is for the '02, but I think it still applies to the '00 as well: http://forum.mpvclub.com/viewtopic.php?p=108448#108448

Basically, the bank 1, sensor 1 is the rear of the engine before the cat converter.

Have you just tried to clear the code and see if it returns? It could be starting to go but may be ok for a while (and not trigger the CEL).

What is the life-time expectency of O2 sensors?

My 01 MPV has 75K on it, do you think I should wait until the Check Egine Light to turn on to change them?

Try some good quality fuel injector cleaner in the tank. It can clear codes, if the problem is not serious.

Javadoc,

Are you positive that the diagram is correct? While I haven't had to replace my Bank 1 Sensor 2 O2 sensor yet (intermittent P0136 code), I am told that this corresponds to the "middle" sensor in the diagram, but there seems to be some confusion all around. The diagram shows the "middle" sensor just upstream of the cat, after the Y, and another sensor after the cat. But the mechanic says that there are two sensors upstream of the pre-cat, and two downstream of the pre-cat, and none just upstream or downstream of the cat.

I got a BG fuel induction cleaning done on my 2000 MPV LX (90K miles), and the CEL has stayed off for quite some time now - don't know whether that helped.

Do you have California Emissions, NLS?

No, mine is federal emissions. I got another diagram faxed by Trussville Mazda when I was getting the CEL, I will try to scan it and attach it. That diagram did not have much text to indicate the sensors, only some part numbers.

Javadoc,

I am attaching the fax received from Trussville Mazda. Now that I look at it more carefully, perhaps it is the same as what you had posted. The 18-861B (No.1 through No.4) are the O2 sensors. I think the diagram at the top is for California emissions, and the diagram at the bottom right is for Federal emissions, with No.4 corresponding to the "middle" sensor and No.2 to the "rear" sensor - looks like the Y is to the right of the No.4 sensor. I am not sure whether No.1 is the "Front, LH" and No.3 is the "Front, RH", or vice versa. If that can be deduced, then it would be easier to figure out whether the "middle" is the equivalent of "Rear, LH" or "Rear, RH". The Bank 1/2, Sensor 1/2 terminology is confusing to the part vendors, as it does not correspond to their normal terminology.

Glad we've got it cleared up. Does this help you at all, though? Smile

I'm trying to find a larger image than the one that I posted for you (which I grabbed from another thread, btw) for future use, b/c this will be something more people will ask about as the MPVs age.

I think Mazdafla had posted information regarding the correlation between Bank/Sensor to lh, rh, before cat, after cat once, but don't think he covered the "middle" and "rear", since they are not normal configurations. One dealer said that Bank 1, Sensor 2 is the "middle", but part vendors don't go by either terminology.
